Apple’s macOS Catalina arrived on October 7th. This recent version of the MAC operating system offers users “powerful ways to do great things” according to Apple’s website, and we certainly agree. The new features include separate apps for music, TV and podcasts that replace iTunes. It also has the Find my app that merges Find My Mac and find my friends. This particular app contains the activation lock, which prevents anyone from using your device if it is lost or stolen. Other new features include an updated Photos app, Screen Time and Sidecar, allowing Mac users to use their iPad as a second screen. There is also a gallery view and shared folders for notes, sender blocking and unsubscribe features for emails, and increased security. These and many other features are described in detail on the official Apple website. If you haven’t upgraded your Mac to this awesome new operating system, it’s time to do it. It’s free and easy to download with our step-by-step guide.
Make sure your Mac meets the requirements
Before starting the download, first, check if your Mac is compatible. Here is a complete list of Mac devices supported by macOS Catalina.
- MacBook (2015 or newer)
- MacBook Air (2012 or newer)
- MacBook Pro (2012 or newer)
- Mac mini (2012 or after)
- iMac (2012 or after)
- iMac Pro
- Mac Pro (2013 or after)
Other requirements include:
- Minimum memory of 4 GB
- 12.5 GB of available storage or up to 18.5 GB when upgrading from OS X 10.10 or earlier
- The operating system must be OS X 10.9 or higher. If you are currently using OS X 10.7 or 10.8, you must first download OS X 10.11 before you can upgrade to macOS Catalina.
If you meet all these requirements, you can proceed to the next step.
Prepare Your Mac
Apple strongly recommends that you back up your Mac before installing an upgrade. This serves as protection in matters of problems during installation, such as a connection error or hardware failure.
How to download
Once all the requirements have been met and your Mac is backed up and ready, it’s time to start downloading. If you are upgrading from macOS Mojave, the direct predecessor of Catalina, select the Apple menu, go to System Preferences and search for Software Update. You should see an Upgrade button now. Click here to start your download. If you are using an earlier version of macOS, you can download macOS Catalina from the App Store. An installer should open automatically after confirming the download. Follow the on-screen instructions and you are about to install macOS Catalina. The entire download and installation process may take some time. Make sure that you have a stable Internet connection and that your device is connected.
Apple’s recent Mac operating system is further proof of why the company is the best at what it does. You can always confidently buy in stores selling MacBooks and other Apple devices, knowing that you are getting only high-quality products.
